Ethan Heck
Biostatistics Intern.

Introduction
I am a student member of KPHA and attended the 2026 student day. While at student day, I participated in the 3-minute thesis competition. I also attended all student related sessions that day, and stayed for the duration of the conference.

Professional Background
I am graduating (ed) with my Master's in Biostatistics from the University of Kentucky in early May. I completed my undergraduate studies at Union Commonwealth University in Biology. While at Union, I completed two novel research projects funded through the Appalachian College association (Predicting Salamander Diversity in Southeast Kentucky and Predicting Skin Cancer Diagnosis Using Machine Learning). While at UK, I have served as a student representative for the accreditation board. Additionally, I have completed 3 internships at the Kentucky Department of Public Health. I also won first place in this year's 3-minute thesis competition (PH research category).

KPHA Involvement
I am involved in KPHA student day/ student activities including the 3 minute thesis competition.

Personal Insights:
I am motivated to find work within public health due to the impact is has on the daily lives of my neighbors in Kentucky. I love the state and have lived here my whole life, and I love the people in the state. I hope to use my degree to better the lives of those around me. My personal philosophy when it comes to work (in what limited experience I have) is that if you approach it as doing it for your neighbor rather than yourself, the work will be extremely rewarding.

Accomplishments & Recognition1st place KPHA student 3-minute thesis competition. 2x Ledford's Scholar Recipient.

KPHA & Public Health in the Future
I see KPHA serving an integral role for PH within Kentucky as we move through challenging times for the field. I see public health as whole being resilient and adapting to changes to continue to serve those around us.
