Get Ready to Lead: Workforce Training for National Preparedness Success

Preparedness is a shared responsibility involving individuals, communities, private and nonprofit sectors, faith-based organizations, and all levels of government. The National Preparedness Goal is to ensure a secure and resilient nation capable of preventing, protecting, mitigating, responding, and recovering from major threats and hazards. It outlines what it means for the whole community to prepare for any disaster or emergency.

The following training resources are available for your reference to help you, your family, and your community meet our National Preparedness Goal during National Preparedness Month:

  1. TRAIN Kentucky: TRAIN is a national learning network that provides quality training opportunities for professionals who protect and improve the public’s health. Preparedness, response, and recovery-related training can be found by searching: 1) Courses, 2) Training Plans, and/or 3) Resources.
  2. Kentucky Division of Emergency Management (KYEM) Training and Exercise Program: KYEM coordinates and offers training throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The training opportunities help to ensure “we are prepared” for all hazards, natural and manmade, to keep Kentucky safe. Each course is available at no cost to eligible students.
  3. National Preparedness Course Catalog: The National Preparedness Course Catalog is an online searchable catalog featuring a compilation of courses managed by the three primary FEMA training organizations: the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP), the Emergency Management Institute (EMI), and the National Training and Education Division (NTED). The National Preparedness Course Catalog features a wide range of topics in multiple delivery modes to meet the increasing training needs of federal, state, local, territorial, and tribal audiences.
  4. Organizations Preparing for Emergency Needs (OPEN): OPEN is FEMA’s disaster preparedness training for communities and organizations that includes a web-based, self-guided training and a downloadable instructor kit that will guide participants on how to identify risks, locate resources, and take disaster preparedness actions. Because of the importance of keeping the community going, OPEN empowers organizations with emergency preparedness training to better prepare for incidents.

The above is a small sample of preparedness-related training resources. Additional resources can also be found through the American Red Cross, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the Kentucky Department for Public Health – Emergency Preparedness and Response Program, and Kentucky Public Health Exploration Program.
